From 1786 to 1826 Restigouche County was part of Northumberland County
From 1827 to 1837 it was part of Gloucester County
In 1837 Restigouche was formed

The name Restigouche we are told comes to us from the MicMac Indians of the area
who named it Listigotj or "dividing like the five fingers of the hand"
this represents no doubt, the four (4) rivers which run into the Restigouche
The Upsalquitch river, Kedgwick river, Patapedia river, Matapedia river
and of course the Restigouche itself makes five (5)
